The news surrounding new cryptocurrency thriller “Crypto” remains positive, with the movie currently in its post-production stage and still on course for a 2019 release. Highly rated newcomer Beau Knapp (Seven Seconds) stars, with Aussie Luke Hemsworth (older bro of Chris and Liam) playing his brother. Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls, The Handmaid’s Tale) plays a mysterious art dealer, while Kurt Russell will play Knapp and Harmsworth’s father. John Stalburg (High School) will direct.
Hopes remain high for “Crypto”, surely the first Hollywood movie to feature the cryptocurrency industry as a backdrop. The movie will star 29-year old Beau Knapp, who is mainly know for TV show Seven Seconds, but has also been grabbing attention in movies such as Southpaw, The Gift, The Nice Guys and the remake of Death Wish.
Knapp’s brother is played by Luke Hemsworth (pictured), who was less well known than his towering younger brothers Chris (Thor) and Liam (Hunger Games), until he landed the role of security officer Ashley Stubbs in the HBO series Westworld, possibly the biggest show on the planet.
Alexis Bledel gained fame while still a schoolgirl in Gilmore Girls, and recently she has starred in the controversial but acclaimed TV series The Handmaid’s Tale.
Crypto will also feature 67-year old Kurt Russell now in his sixth decade in movies. Russell began his career as a Disney child star, and was an A-lister back in the 1980s and early 90s in hits like Escape from New York, The Thing, Silkwood, Tequila Sunrise, Backdraft, Unlawful Entry, Breakdown and Tombstone.
Quentin Tarantino revitalized Russell’s flagging career by casting him in 2015’s Hateful Eight, and he will also appear in Tarantino’s Charles Manson biopic Once Upon A Time In Hollywood next year.
Director John Stalberg’s 2010 debut High School starred Adrian Brody and gained rave reviews when first released on the film festival circuit, but the studio decided to make some changes before giving it a general release in 2012. That version of the movie was neither well received nor successful at the box office. This is Stalberg’s second bite of the cherry, and hopefully it will be a happier experience this time around.
Stalberg had this to say about the Crypto experience:
“I am overjoyed to be working with such an incredible cast to bring this timely, thrilling story to life. Beau is incredibly talented, and seeing him bring this character to life opposite talent like Alexis, Kurt, Luke, Jeremie and Vincent has been a dream come true.”
What’s Crypto About?
Crypto tells the story of a young FBI anti-money-laundering agent (Knapp) who is working on a case in his New York State hometown. Knapp’s father (Russell) and brother (Hemsworth) own a farm, but are finding it hard to make ends meet, and he feels compelled to somehow help them. The story explores both this element of drama, plus an altogether darker world which Knapp finds himself dragged into, featuring corruption, money laundering, and yes, you guessed it, cryptocurrency.
Crypto looks set to be a dark drama that is set against the backdrop of changing economic times and the rise in popularity and notoriety of cryptocurrency. Crypto has been described as a “tonal amalgam” of The Firm and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, two very different but very good movies. Hopefully it will be a fun, thrilling ride, and the reputation of cryptocurrency will emerge relatively intact!
