Akon, the 45-year old R&B star whose hits include “Mister Lonely” and “Smack That” is back in the news this week, but not for his music. The Senegal native says he’s set to release his own cryptocurrency called AKoin, and its success will fund his latest project – a “Real Life Wakanda.”
Senegalese-born US R&B superstar Akon made his name in the noughties with a string of hit singles and million selling albums. “Mister Lonely” and “Smack That” were two early hits, but he also had back-to-back US no.1’s with “I Wanna Love You” and “Don’t Matter.” Akon has collaborated with many of the biggest names in popular music including Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and Shaggy.
Akon Talks Crypto And Wakanda
Akon is in attendance this week at the Cannes Lions Festival which is being held in Paris. Akon took the opportunity to formally announce his cryptocurrency – AKoin. Akon believes crypto is the savior of Africa, and he intends to construct “Akon Crypto City” in Senegal which Akon describes as being like “a real-life Wakanda”. Wakanda is the fictional home of the Marvel superhero Black Panther.
Akon Crypto City will be located just a short car-journey from the Senegalese capital Dakar. According to Akon, it will be “the first 100% crypto-based city and will use the AKoin ecosystem for transactions.” The Senegalese president has already given Akon a gift of 2,000 acres of land toward Akon Crypto City.
